How to clean brass?

Tarnished or covered with fingerprints: We’ll tell you here how you can clean brass. Five effective home remedies for a radiant shine.

Cleaning brass: this is how it works!

Brass is a combination of copper and zinc (up to 40 per cent). The colour can be different depending on the zinc content. But not everything that looks like brass is brass! The magnet test shows whether the object is made of brass: It is more likely to be iron with a brass coating if the magnet sticks. In the case of a layer, more aggressive cleaning agents should be avoided not to damage them. With brass pieces, however, you can confidently fall back on five effective home remedies.

How to make brass shine again: 5 tips

You don’t need expensive in-store supplies to clean brass. Here are a few effective home remedies that can help you achieve the same thing:

  • Citric acid

It’s quick and easy with a lemon: Cut the citrus fruit in half and sprinkle them with a bit of salt. Now you put the lemon half over your brass object, then rinse it with a bit of water, dry it with a cloth – and tadaa: it shines again.

  • Vinegar

An alternative to lemon is vinegar essence, which almost everyone in the household has. To do this, you can mix a paste made from equal parts salt and vinegar or salt, flour and vinegar and apply it to the brass, e.g. B., with a toothbrush. Let the mass act for about 10 minutes. Wash the paste off with clear water (don’t leave any of the paste on the brass!) And then dry the brass with a cloth. Alternatively, you can put the item in boiling vinegar and leave it there for a few minutes. Remove with an aid such as a sieve, allow to cool and polish dry.

  • Ketchup

It can be worth taking a look in the refrigerator! Ketchup can also help with cleaning. Smear the brass with it, let the ketchup sit for a while, and then rinse it off again!

  • Toothpaste

Toothpaste will help you polish brass. Again: brush the brass piece with toothpaste, let it work in, wash off and polish dry.

  • Soapy water

Soapy water is helpful to remove fingerprints or grease. Use a cloth and soapy water to clean the brass.

The home remedies will help remove the pollution effectively. And the acidic agents are especially suitable for oxidized objects that thoroughly remove the verdigris.
